Machining and bending of HD pressboard and
Machining of laminated board (HDLP, HDLC)

Machining
In general tools for wood-working are to be used. The board and especially the laminated board is, however, a hard material, and it is very important that all tools are kept very sharp. Dull tools destroy the machined surface of the material by burning or by making it rough. Rotating tools with tungsten bits are recommended for continuous production.

Cutting with shears
Power shears of guillotines of metal-working type are used. Tools must be sharp and set with minimum clearance. Good results are expected with thickness of material 2 mm or less. Thicker materials tend to get burred cuts.

Punching
The punch shall have a small cutting angle and a narrow clearance between punch and die. A spring-loaded holder around the die is recommended. Punching is generally possible with material thickness 4 mm or less.

Sawing
A wood-working band saw or circular saw is used. A circular saw should have tungsten tips for acceptable service life.

Milling
Tungsten-tipped tools are preferable. Optimum cutting speed is about 2000 m/min, and the feed may be up to 30 m/min. The milling machines may be of any suitable type – for wood working or metal-working.

For the machining of large pieces of laminated block material Figeholm has installed custom-built machinery with a large table for optimum use of the raw material.
Drilling
Twist drills may be used for diameters up to 40-50 mm. Beware of burning by dull tools! Speed-steel drills or tungsten-tipped rills are necessary. Larger holes may be cut with a boring bar.

Grinding
Grinding is a practical method e.g. for chamfering (scarfing) of edges for joints. Best results are obtained with belt grinders or cylindrical grinders. Grinding belts or wheels should be carefully selected with suitable grinding materials so that there is no risk for contamination by electrically conductive dust from the grinding operation.
