Notes on Customer Designs
The press plates are always offered and delivered against detailed customer drawings. Regarding the design of the press plate it is self-evident that very delicate shapes should be avoided on such a large and heavy piece, because of the risk of damage in handling and during assembly of the transformer.

Sharp inner corners are awkward because the machining is done by milling on a table. A quite large corner radius should usually be acceptable for the design of winding exit recesses, oil manifold openings, etc.

Holes for the fastening of other parts on the plate must not be placed close to the edge. Drilled horizontal holes (along the plane of lamination) should be avoided because of risk of delamination. This is of course particularly dangerous with threaded holes.

Faces and mounting holes at skewed angle from the vertical is a complication.

As is well known, it is usual to perforate heavy laminate blocks with a pattern of drainage holes to facilitate the evacuation of moisture during factory drying of the transformer.
